Princess Cruises has made the decision to cancel calls in Puerto Vallarta for the rest of 2011. This comes shortly after the company canceled visits to Mazatlan, citing the threat of violence in the area.
The decision from Princess follows a U.S. State Department travel warning that specifically mentioned the rise of drug violence in the state of Jalisco, where Puerto Vallarta is located. Rodolfo Lopez Negrete, chief operating officer of Mexico's Tourism Board, noted that Mexican tourism officials were given no warning of Princess' move, but top Mexican officials, including Secretary of Tourism Gloria Guevara Manzo, have since reached out to the company.
