ASTA's Efforts Help Preserve Tax Exemption for Nebraska Travel Advisors

In a win for the travel industry, Nebraska lawmakers have opted not to impose a new sales tax on the services provided by the state's travel advisors. This decision came as a relief to advisors who had feared the potential financial consequences of such a tax.

The four-week special legislative session in Nebraska, focused on tax relief, had raised concerns among travel advisors that their services could be subject to a new sales tax as a way to generate additional revenue. Industry estimates suggested this tax could have added up to $4.4 million in extra costs across the sector.

The American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) played a pivotal role in amplifying the voices of Nebraska's travel advisors, coordinating a grassroots advocacy campaign. Recognizing the potential impact, travel advisors across Nebraska mobilized, reaching out to state legislators through calls and emails to urge them to reconsider the proposed tax. Advisors warned that such a measure could drive their clients to seek services from providers in neighboring states, where travel-related taxes would remain absent.

Removing the sales tax exemption for travel advisors and tour operators would have had serious financial consequences for both travelers and travel advisors, with many clients seeking advisors outside Nebraska to avoid the tax,” said Jessica Klement, vice president of advocacy for ASTA. “We are thrilled that the sales tax exemption remains intact, protecting both consumers and travel advisors in Nebraska.”

While the Nebraska governor has indicated the issue may resurface next year, the current preservation of the sales tax exemption allows the state's travel advisors to continue operating as normal.
