What to Know About Barge Cruising, According to French Waterways’ CEO Rosie Mansfield

As the river cruise market continues to grow in popularity, some travelers are looking beyond traditional river ships toward barge cruises in favor of a more intimate experience.

We sat down with Rosie Mansfield, CEO of French Waterways, to learn her insights on the growing appeal of barge cruising, about the dozens of craft the company represents and how travel advisors can identify the ideal clients for each experience.

With the larger river cruise market expanding, how is barge cruising specifically contributing to the growth?

While barge cruising isn’t growing the way mainstream river cruising currently is (through large-scale fleet expansion and shipbuilding), it’s contributing holistically to cruise market growth by attracting a different type of traveler — one seeking deeper immersion, exclusivity and authenticity. Since most barge cruises accommodate between two and 12 guests, travelers are choosing this type of cruise as they increasingly prioritize meaningful and participatory experiences over volume tourism.

In many cases, it’s expanding the overall river cruise audience by appealing to guests who may never have considered a traditional river cruise.

The two are entirely different experiences. Two of the biggest differences are scale and pace.

A typical river cruise ship may carry 80 to 200 guests, whereas a hotel barge accommodates between two and 12 guests, with a handful that have capacity to accommodate up to 22. This creates a far more intimate and personalized experience. There is no queuing for anything. The feeling of a barge cruise is privacy, whereas those considering a river cruise may look at the social opportunity that it provides.

Hotel barges typically measure between 98 and 128 feet in length, enabling them to navigate the smaller canals and waterways that are beyond the reach of larger river ships. This provides them access to charming villages, renowned vineyards, family-owned producers and hidden corners of France that many travelers never encounter. Rather than observing the landscape from a distance, guests feel immersed in it, traveling at a gentle pace that fosters a genuine connection with the destination. Life onboard is relaxed and unhurried, with flexible itineraries, close interaction with the crew and enriching experiences that showcase local culture, cuisine and sense of place.

If mainstream river cruising is akin to a boutique hotel, barge cruising is more comparable to staying in a private country house with a dedicated staff.

Where are some of the most coveted barge routes?

France remains one of the world's premier barge cruising destinations thanks to its extensive canal network, regional diversity and culinary heritage. France recognizes and invests in its canal network due to the unique tourism opportunity that it supports for the country.

Among the most coveted routes is Burgundy, renowned globally for its vineyards, sensational gastronomy and picturesque villages. The Canal du Midi in southern France is a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its history and Mediterranean ambiance.

Provence and the Camargue offer a blend of Roman heritage, bustling markets, wine estates and dramatic landscapes with herds of wild white horses. Champagne is only a few hours from Paris and is growing in popularity; you don’t have to love champagne to enjoy this route, but it helps.

Bordeaux and Aquitaine routes host some of the most exquisite excursions to St. Emilion and offer some of the quietest stretches of canals — so private you’ll feel like a VIP.

What is new at French Waterways?

French Waterways is continually developing new partnerships and special experiences to bring even more exclusive and memorable cruise weeks to our guests. Building on our long-standing relationships with barge owners, we introduced elevated excursions on itineraries, such as Michelin dining and helicopter flights, and special rates on select remaining 2026 departures.

We’re also delighted to welcome Marguerite, Belmond's newest luxury hotel barge, to our portfolio for the end of the 2026 season, giving guests another exceptional option for exploring France's waterways in style.

A key part of our business is maintaining close relationships with the barges, owners and crews we represent. Our team regularly travels throughout France to inspect vessels, experience itineraries firsthand and meet with our partners.

How can agents best engage with the barge cruise product?

If clients are interested in wine, gastronomy, history, cycling or private family travel, a barge cruise could be the perfect fit. The key is to understand what motivates them and the type of experience they’re seeking. Once you have a clear picture of their interests, our team at French Waterways can help identify the most suitable option.

As dedicated barge cruise specialists, we bring firsthand knowledge of the vessels, owners, crews and cruising regions. We work closely with travel advisors to match each client with the right barge and itinerary based on their interests, travel style and budget. Our role is collaborative and we partner with agents to ensure their clients enjoy the most rewarding and memorable barge cruise experience possible.

Who is the ideal client to consider for this type of travel?

Barge cruising appeals to travelers who value authenticity, comfort and personal service over scale.

Traditionally, barge clients have an age demographic of 60 and older. However, this is a myth that needs to be dispelled.

Traditionally, barge clients have an age demographic of 60 and older. However, this is a myth that needs to be dispelled. Barging can be the ultimate girls’ trip or an unforgettable 40th birthday treat, and it’s genuinely the most restorative vacation because you’re entirely cared for during the entire week. It’s France’s best-kept secret.

Ideal clients include couples seeking a relaxed and immersive European experience; multigenerational families looking for exclusive-use charters; groups of friends celebrating special occasions and big birthdays; people who value fully curated experiences (with every single thing taken care of); honeymoons and babymoons; food and wine enthusiasts; active travelers interested in walking, cycling and local exploration; and repeat river cruisers looking for a more intimate alternative to larger vessels.

Many barge guests are well-traveled individuals who have already experienced traditional ocean or river cruises and are seeking something more personal, exclusive and destination-focused.
