Modern Adventure — an experiential travel, guided tour operator start-up based in Portland, Ore. — aims to forge strong brand-customer relationships through immersive, life-changing travel around the globe. And in today’s digital age, consumers are always looking for that wow-factor, a special ingredient that makes a person or product stand out while also imparting a sense of involvement and importance.
Partnerships with successful creatives, hardworking professionals and mission-oriented businesses are the foundation of Modern Adventure’s meticulously constructed luxury itineraries. Each is designed to bring someone with specialized knowledge together with people who are interested in that expertise, and then send them all on a fulfilling journey.
“Our true north is working with people who we admire and respect,” said Luis Vargas, the company’s founder and CEO. “To be able to shine a light on what they do and why they do it via an incredible travel experience creates a unique perspective.”
Vargas brings a diverse background to the table, having worked in executive roles for REI, Disney and Backroads. He also serves as president of the Adventure Travel Trade Association.
“I’ve always seen firsthand what travel can do both in a person’s life and for a brand,” he said. “The inspiration for Modern Adventure is really taking what I’ve seen and learned over the course of my career and bringing it to life.”
The result is a deeper dive into how discovering the world can develop meaningful connections.

Have a closet filled with fine tweed coats? Imagine roaming the Scottish Highlands with Joseph D. Mueller, the proprietor of Wildwood & Company — a seller of quality, handcrafted-tailoring in the Pacific Northwest.
Do you dream of eating your way across Italy? Visit Rome’s top restaurants with Joshua McFadden, head chef at Portland’s Ave Gene, who will undoubtedly unlock a much deeper appreciation of the local cuisine, because his own style was influenced by his schooling there.
This kind of specific, intimate trip is designed to bring like-minded individuals together, foster loyalty and inspire engagement among a brand’s larger fan base, while simultaneously providing unforgettable memories for the clients — and Modern Adventure is just getting started.
Other destinations slated for 2018 include Rajasthan, India; Nashville, Tenn.; Vietnam; and Argentina.
This year, from Sept. 9-15, female adventurers can embark on a women-only week of island hopping in Greece with Lacey Stone, a wellness expert and celebrity trainer. In this small-group configuration, travelers participate in Stone’s signature boot camps beside the Aegean Sea while truly getting to know her, sharing hiking, biking and snorkeling experiences in a beautiful cerulean environment.

With a few trips already in the books, the feedback has thus far been resoundingly positive, which Vargas says is validating.
Others are beginning to take notice as well. In November 2017, Modern Adventure announced the completion of a $1 million initial round of investments. The company is intent on growing its base of collaborators, gaining customers and continuing product development.
At its heart, Modern Adventure is about creating profound moments and understanding that can affect humanity in a beneficial way.
“My personal and professional purpose is to inspire and enable people to have extraordinary travel experiences with the belief that travel can be a force for good,” Vargas said. “The context and empathy that travel builds are sorely needed in today’s world.”
