Tauck Soldiers On
Tauck’s new, all-inclusive, eight-day guided journey Yosemite and Sequoia: John Muir’s California explores the history of the Buffalo Soldiers as well as the work of naturalist John Muir and the story behind America’s National Parks system.
Ken Burns, creator of the award-winning documentary series “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea,” helped create the itinerary and developed a 20-minute film specifically for Tauck. Burns was especially interested in the role of the Buffalo Soldiers, African American U.S. Army troops who served in the west as well as Yosemite and Sequoia in the era before park rangers.
“The Buffalo Soldiers are – in fact – a huge part of U.S. history. And with regards to the National Parks, they are crucial,” said Burns.
Tauck’s itinerary begins with sightseeing in San Francisco, which includes a visit to the Presidio where the Buffalo Soldiers were garrisoned. In Sequoia National Park, clients will learn about Buffalo Soldiers commander Charles Young, the first African American to oversee one of America’s National Parks. After two, two-night stays in inside-the-park lodges in Yosemite and Sequoia, clients travel back to San Francisco for a final night at the Fairmont San Francisco.
