Fur Rendezvous - Alaska's largest and oldest winter festival, which has also been rated the best winter carnival in the world by National Geographic Traveler - will take place in Anchorage from Feb. 22 to March 3 this year.
The event, affectionally known as the Fur Rondy, began in 1935 as a three-day sporting event that featured skiing, hockey, basketball, boxing and a children's sled dog race. Today, the festival includes more than 15 events and 100 other activities. Fan favorites include Outhouse Races and Running of the Reindeer, a dash down the streets of Anchorage with caribou right at the racers' heels. Locals also participate in Yukigassen, a team snowball fight tournament, and sports such as snowshoe softball. And in the Rondy World Championship Sled Dog Races, dog teams and their mushers complete three high-speed 25-mile loops over three days.
