Walking through Victoria (the capital of British Columbia, Canada), travelers will likely be struck by the city’s scenic waterfront, abundant greenery and deliciously fresh air. It feels particularly clean here, and that’s no accident — not only are many of the destination’s businesses operating with sustainability in mind, but Victoria itself is a leader in environmental initiatives, with a plan to reduce community emissions by 80% and switch to 100% renewable energy by 2050, as well as reduce landfill waste by 50% by 2040.

From sustainably minded restaurants to responsible hotels and tours, here are more of Victoria's eco-friendly travel offerings.

Where to Stay in Victoria, B.C.

Offering gorgeous views of the Inner Harbour and downtown Victoria, the Inn at Laurel Point provides a sustainable stay without sacrifice. My spacious room featured a patio overlooking the water, and a huge bathroom with a deep, delightful tub. Better yet, the hotel has been carbon neutral since 2009; installed honey beehives to encourage pollination; introduced composting; and has set ambitious goals for zero-waste practices, renewable energy generation and more by 2030.

The Parkside Hotel & Spa is another green choice, as a climate-positive, Biosphere Certified hotel (a label that verifies sustainable practices) that is also a member of Preferred Hotels’ Beyond Green portfolio.

Sustainable Things to Do

It’s easy to explore downtown’s scenic waterfront, restaurants and shops in an eco-minded way, thanks to the area’s excellent walkability and abundant bike lanes.

Whale watching is a top draw in Victoria, and two companies that practice it responsibly right out of the harbor are Prince of Whales Whale & Marine Wildlife Adventures and Eagle Wing Tours. Clients can also take to the skies with Harbour Air Seaplanes, which operates flightseeing tours from the harbor, and has been carbon neutral since 2007. The line is also working on converting to an all-electric fleet of seaplanes.

Finally, recommend that clients explore the area’s Indigenous culture and history with Explore Songhees, which offers guided walking and canoe tours.

Eco-Friendly Eateries

At 10 Acres Bistro, local farm-to-table fare is on the seasonal menu, focusing on ethically sourced and served food. Highlights of my delicious meal included duck confit salad, gruyere potato gratin fries and roasted beets with smoked yogurt. The 10 Acres Farm & Restaurants brand also has three other eateries in the city.

And be sure to recommend that clients have afternoon tea at Pendray Inn & Tea House, a charming, historic manor that dates back to the 1890s. The traditional tea service — which features an array of sweet and savory treats alongside gorgeous teapots and cups — was designed with perfect portions in mind, to limit food waste.
