Melody Owen designed a grand stairwell chandelier created by Elements Glass for the eighth floor grand stairwell. Called Bird Song, the chandelier uses glass, LEDs and steel for a 30-foot hanging structure with 11 strands to illustrate the audio waves of bird songs from the Pacific Northwest. // (c) 2008 Starwood Hotels

Art Consultant Paige Powell, a Portland native and close friend of Pop Art legend Andy Warhol, worked with Sage Hospitality, which owns and operates the Nines, to ensure that the works of prominent regional artists were displayed throughout the hotel. // (c) 2008 Starwood Hotels

Video artist Matt McCormick created an abstract work of images from around Portland to be displayed on LCD panels in the hotel's restaurant, Urban Farmer. The piece changes very subtly and slowly over the course of the day, with entrances as intriguing as departures. // (c) 2008 Starwood Hotels

Ellen George designed Bloom, a piece fabricated by Bullseye Glass in which bold shapes and rich colors are composed upon six vertical glass panels that are overlapped and staggered on three different planes. The piece stands behind the reception desk. // (c) 2008 Starwood Hotels

The centerpiece of the hotel's renovation was the addition of a seven-story light-filled atrium made to fit within the structure of a luxury hotel. The creation of this atrium gives all of the hotel rooms -- even those on the interior --access to beautiful views and natural light. Beneath, the lobby itself is an art piece, with contemporary furniture pieces upholstered in rich jewel tones of amber and garnet with jade and chocolate accents. Guests are tempted to lounge in groups or in more personal surroundings within sheer-draped glass gazebos. // (c) 2008 Starwood Hotels
