Bookings for this year’s spring break season have increased by triple digits (134%) over last year, according to an annual study from travel insurance provider Allianz Partners.
Allianz surveyed the booking data for 4.1 million U.S. travelers’ trips, ranging from five to eight days in length and planned over a two-month period (between Feb. 18 and April 18, 2022).
What Are the Top 10 Most-Booked Destinations This Year?
Warm-weather destinations and big cities reign supreme this year, from the southern and western U.S. to Mexico. Florida alone took five of the top 10 spots, including the No. 1 most-booked destination: Orlando, Fla. (also voted No. 1 in 2021).
Following Orlando was Phoenix, which came in at No. 2 for the second year in a row. Other domestic destinations rounding out the top 10 are Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; New York City; Miami; Fort Myers, Fla.; Salt Lake City; and Tampa, Fla.
New York and Los Angeles knocked out two destinations from last year, including Denver, Colo., and Honolulu. New York is up 600% over last year, and Los Angeles is up by almost 300%.
Americans are planning their revenge travel trips for the 2022 spring break season as travel roars back into action.
Domestic Travel Remains a Popular Choice, While Mexico Snags the Top International Spot
According to the survey, 81% of travelers are staying closer to home, booking trips in the continental U.S. These trips also tend to be shorter (closer to five days in length), while international trips skew longer (closer to eight nights in length).
Top international destinations include hot spots in Mexico, with Cancun and San Jose del Cabo topping the list at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Following are Puerto Vallarta, the Dominican Republic and other islands in the Caribbean. London rounds out the top 10.
What Is Motivating Spring Break Travel?
COVID-19 entry restrictions may be one reason why international travel is pacing behind domestic getaways, but pent-up demand has led to increased confidence and greater motivation to plan “revenge trips” in 2022, according to Daniel Durazo, director of marketing and communications for Allianz Partners USA.
“Americans are planning their revenge travel trips for the 2022 spring break season as travel roars back into action,” Durazo said. “Our survey results validate the appeal of lively city adventures in New York City, beach and adventure in Florida and the Southwest, while long-favored international locales like Mexico and the Caribbean are poised to welcome travelers longing for a memorable escape.”
