What:
According to the 2018 Travelport U.S. Vacation Survey, more than half of all U.S. millennials (56 percent) are planning to travel more this summer compared to last year, while only 35 percent of Gen Xers and 22 percent of baby boomers plan to do so.
Why It Matters:
Millennials are planning to spend $5,000 or more on vacations, which is a higher spend than any other group. They’re also most likely to use a travel agent (23 percent versus only 7 and 6 percent of Gen Xers and baby boomers, respectively). The survey also asked respondents how much more likely they were to use a travel agency if a mobile itinerary-management app would be available — millennials led the charge with the highest percentage (70 percent) interested in using a tech-savvy agent.
Fast Facts:
- Males are more likely to splurge on vacation spending than women, with 37 percent of men planning to spend more than $5,000 in the next year, versus 15 percent of females.
- In the last 12 months, millennials (at 51 percent) have traveled the most, compared to Gen Xers and baby boomers (each at 48 percent).
- Most baby boomers (78 percent) are planning to travel either the same amount or less in the next year.
- Americans most likely to travel this summer are those with postgraduate degrees and incomes over $200,000.
What They Are Saying:
“Travelport’s survey is good news for the U.S. travel industry, as Americans are cautiously optimistic about taking vacations this summer and next year,” said Erika Moore, vice president and general manager for the United States for Travelport. “The key is offering consumers, regardless of their budgets, the best air, hotel and other vacation deals, which requires travel providers and travel sellers to deliver a personalized, seamless and stress-free experience at each step of the vacation journey.”
