When I mentioned to some female friends that our next cover story was on women-only trips (“The Future Is Female,” page 12), their reactions were basically the same: “Sign me up.”
When I asked why they felt that way, the responses were varied. Sometimes it was the lure of not having to take care of others, or the opportunity to reconnect with female friends and family. Or, it was a feeling of safety at not having to travel with strange men. Most often, it was just about the freedom to be themselves.
“When I go on a trip with my female friends, we do whatever we want, whenever we want,” one friend told me. “We focus on each other and don’t worry about pleasing anyone else. We can truly be ourselves.”
Whatever the reason, it’s clear that women-only trips are a popular travel option. Even better for travel advisors, it’s a concept that appeals to a wide range of women. In the past, getaways like these may have been limited to bachelorette parties, but today women of all ages and stages of life see the advantages of reconnecting with old friends — or connecting with potential new friends who share an interest in seeing the world.
Women-only getaways are so compelling that it’s hard to imagine a travel agent not offering them to clients. For one thing, the idea is self-explanatory — women who are open to the idea will see the benefits immediately — making the only discussion about what, where and when.
