What:Host agency Nexion and its parent company, Travel Leaders Group (TLG), recently announced the launch of Veterans in Travel, a new agent training program targeting military vets interested in jump-starting a travel agent career. The initiative includes a full scholarship to TLG’s Travel Leaders of Tomorrow program; two years of membership with Nexion; and opportunities for peer mentorship within the current TLG network. AMVETS has endorsed the program.
Why It Matters:Not only does this program bring a fresh wave of talent into an already thriving industry, but it also offers its participants a unique opportunity for entrepreneurship. Veterans may face several issues during post-service reintegration, and programs like this one can help them succeed.
Fast Facts:- TLG will waive Nexion’s initiation fee of $199 and a monthly fee of $218 for two years of membership with Nexion. They will also provide a full scholarship for Travel Leaders of Tomorrow (a $1,800 value) and the opportunity to have approximately $250 reimbursed for program materials.
-The rate for unemployment of veterans is currently 4.7 percent, according to Sherman Gillums Jr., chief strategy officer for AMVETs.
- In 2012, veterans owned 2.5 million businesses and employed 5.5 million people. They are more likely to hire other veterans over nonveterans, according to Gillums.
What They Are Saying:“I thank Travel Leaders of Tomorrow and Nexion for their continued support for those who served and what this opportunity will mean for those whose fullest potential awaits them through this new program,” said Gillums. “As a veteran whose transition from the military included rehabilitation, a period of reintegration and moments of uncertainty from time to time, I appreciate the flexibility in work location and self-paced work schedule that this opportunity could offer those who share my circumstances. This pathway for veterans to become travel industry entrepreneurs will be empowering.”
