Named Seattle’s 2005 General Manager of the Year by Les Clefs
d’Or, Paul Ishii is also an accomplished artist and
photographer.
Q: How can the arts improve the running of a
hotel?
A: Over the years, the hotel industry has become more and more
standardized, and the passion has dimmed. The arts help us to be
more creative and personal in how we deliver our guest
services.
Q: How would you describe your managerial
style?
A: We have guidelines, but not a thick manual of directed
procedures. I like to focus on the self-expression of each
employee. For instance, we reimburse employees who want to take
classes like photography and music.
Q: You’ve been with the Mayflower Park since 1998. What
makes it special?
A: The hotel is 79 years old and family-owned. It understands its
community, guests and staff. I think many travelers will make the
extra effort to stay where they too will be treated as
individuals.
Q: What advice would you give to travel agents trying to
boost their Seattle bookings?
A: Travel agents should visit Seattle themselves. The city has
gotten more sophisticated over the years.
