Anyone who has been on a river cruise is likely familiar with Quietvox, the creators of the shore excursion listening device used by most cruise companies. Fortunately, cruisers are in for some serious upgrades in 2025.
Most notably, the QV10 model will introduce built-in Bluetooth connectivity to support a direct wireless connection with zero latency. This will surely be a game changer for clients on ocean cruises and river cruises alike who will now be able to pocket the device without any tangles.
Michael Klante, CEO of Quietvox, shares more below. The device is now ready and will go into production at the end of this year.
What is the form factor of QV10? What size and weight is it compared to previous models?
The new devices will resemble the current models in terms of weight and dimensions for several key reasons.
We're sticking with heavier, conventional lithium-ion batteries due to safety concerns associated with lighter alternatives, ensuring zero risk. The device retains a square shape and incorporates a large E Ink (electronic ink) display, which allows for easy viewing from a distance, helping to quickly identify if a guest is tuned to the wrong channel.
Although we haven't released images yet, you'll soon see the new model. Our design philosophy emphasizes functionality and reliability over aesthetics, ensuring the devices operate flawlessly at all times.
Why has Bluetooth not been an available feature until now?
The main hurdles have been the differing communication protocols and recent updates by major tech companies such as Apple and Google. Implementing Bluetooth previously would have introduced significant latency, compromising the user experience.
How will the new unit connect to their guide’s channel, another potential pain point?
The new unit will utilize manual channel selection to connect to the guide's channel. This approach was chosen because it's crucial for guides to be well-versed with the device, given that issues often arise from the guide's side rather than the guest's.
Will you offer your own wireless Quietvox-branded earpiece, as well as a traditional wired one?
We won't be developing a proprietary wireless earpiece. Instead, our new device will be compatible with all existing market earpieces.
However, we'll still offer a wired option. This ensures continuity in case a user's wireless device runs out of battery during an event, such as an excursion.
Will it be compatible with all existing Bluetooth headsets (AirPods, etc.) or will there be any restrictions?
There will be no restrictions; it will work with all existing Bluetooth headsets, including AirPods.
How will the unit pair to said Bluetooth devices without dongles?
The device will pair directly with Bluetooth devices, similar to how a smartphone does, without the need for dongles.
How have you solved any Bluetooth (analog to digital) delay issues?
The latency issue associated with Bluetooth's analog to digital conversion has been addressed with a new microchip designed for this purpose.
Are there any other notable improvements the QV10 model will tout?
Beyond Bluetooth and hearing-aid compatibility, users will notice improved sound quality due to digital transmission.
A significant advantage for cruise lines is the device's ability to switch frequencies, eliminating the need for device exchanges when cruising between continents.
How soon do you think cruise travelers can expect to see the updated devices?
The first batch of 500 devices will be introduced on ocean cruises by early 2025, with plans to equip all ocean vessels by the end of that year. River cruises are scheduled for 2026.
Beyond this model, what do you foresee as the future for the Quietvox system?
The future might see a blend of live guide commentary with high-quality, pre-recorded audio content, triggered by GPS for self-guided tours. This hybrid model aims to cater to guests preferring guided tours or exploring independently. Additionally, there will be an expansion in language options for multilingual support.
