This past September, my family — father Davor, mother Michele, sister Katija — and I visited Barcelona, Spain. It turned out to be a good time of year to go since the crowds were small and the weather was still warm. We kept ourselves busy waking up early to visit all the museums and sights in the vast city. Seeing as how most of Spain sleeps in the afternoon during a siesta, we had to pace ourselves so we could eat dinner at 11 p.m. and then go out clubbing at 3 a.m.

The highlight of the trip for me was Gaudi’s unfinished Segrada Di Familia, the gothic surrealist church in the center of the town and definitely the epicenter of Barcelona’s tourism. Inside, we were able to view workers finishing pieces of the church, which is supposed to be completed in the year 2023. We thought it would be cool if we could all come back then to see the finished piece.
Park Guell was another highlight of the trip. The bus ride there took an hour or so, and the hike to the top was anything but easy, but when we finally reached the top, the views were breathtaking.
To me, Barcelona is all about the architecture, history and ideas of the surrealist movement. It’s strange to think that only a couple of decades ago Spain had more of a distaste for the artist who is now so much a part of their city’s major attractions.
We did almost everything you can imagine in the city, from taking in flamenco shows at dive bars to every tourist stop on the map and, somehow, my parents were not only able to keep up with Katija and me, but they actually set the pace! It was definitely a trip not to be forgotten. — Aleks Pevec
