“She’d fly through the air with the greatest of ease.”
These (slightly altered) lyrics from “The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze” floated through my head — as my head floated inches above the ground.
But unlike trapeze artist Jules Leotard — who inspired this old-timey tune — I wasn’t on a trapeze. Rather, I was “flying” while supported by a nylon hammock affixed to the ceiling of the waterfront yoga pavilion at Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay.

And I’ll be honest: I wasn’t doing it “with the greatest of ease,” either. My core burned in protest, and my biceps shook as I attempted to twist my body into unfamiliar positions. Luckily, my instructor, Kenneth, was on hand to guide me through various poses, such as the inverted “spiderman” technique and the outstretched “vampire” position.
AntiGravity Yoga promises a slew of benefits including lengthening ligaments, improving circulation and more (not to mention, swinging through the fresh air is just plain fun).
At the class’ end, we settled into the “womb” pose, which is similar to a yogi’s final corpse pose and meant to mirror time spent in the womb. Feeling warm and cocooned within the silky material, I took a deep breath.
Stretched out — and blissed out — I was feeling greatly at ease.
