On Aug. 2, 2027, the moon will cover the sun and, for a few minutes, a total solar eclipse will occur — if you're in the right place. The eclipse path in 2027 will cross southern Spain, areas in northern Africa and parts of the Middle East.
The best place to watch the total solar eclipse is within the “path of totality,” which is where 100% of the sun will be covered by the moon for a brief period of time. Being close to the path of totality — even in the 99% coverage area — is a vastly different experience than being in full totality, so make sure your clients are aware of that when booking.
If clients are in the path of totality when a total solar eclipse occurs, they’ll see the sky darken and feel the temperature drop. Planets and stars may become visible in the sky, and interesting shadows may occur as the moon blocks the sun, leaving only a ring of the sun’s wispy-looking corona visible around its edges. I saw this awe-inspiring phenomenon for myself in August 2017, when a total solar eclipse crossed the U.S., and it is absolutely unforgettable.
The 2027 solar eclipse is due to be the second-longest eclipse of the 21st century, with six minutes and 22 seconds of totality near Luxor, Egypt. This eclipse is also highly anticipated because the odds of good-viewing weather are high along many parts of the path, according to Eclipsophile, though it’s certainly possible that clouds, rain, smoke, dust and other factors could impede viewing. (Note: Wherever your clients view the eclipse, they must follow important safety guidelines.)
While 2027 may seem far away, tours and hotels are filling up fast, with some already forming waiting lists, so it’s important to book soon. Here are some top locations where clients can watch the incredible solar spectacle next year.
Gibraltar
With 4.5 minutes of totality, Gibraltar is a great place to watch the total solar eclipse. Advisors and clients can check out the events the Gibraltar Astronomical Society is organizing, as well as view the organization’s solar eclipse page for updates. There are also many other activities for travelers to Gibraltar, including dolphin- and whale-watching boat trips, lighthouse tours and visits to the Gibraltar National Museum, The Great Siege Tunnels and more.

Malaga, Spain
Malaga is known for its seaside location along Costa del Sol, with plenty of things to do, including visiting gorgeous beaches, historic sites and museums. The city is directly in the path of the eclipse, and although it has a shorter period of totality than some other locations, it offers numerous non-eclipse attractions, including the Alcazaba fortress, Gibralfaro Castle and Malaga Cathedral. Marbella, Spain

Totality near Luxor will last for six minutes and 22 seconds, which is the second-longest time of totality for any eclipse in the 21st century. For this reason, Luxor is an incredibly popular destination for the 2027 eclipse. Solar spectacle seekers will also have plenty to do during the rest of their visit, such as visiting Luxor Temple, Luxor Museum and Valley of the Kings, as well as going for scenic hot-air balloon rides. Nile River, Egypt
If your clients prefer to view the eclipse from the Nile itself, there are a number of small luxury ships that serve as floating hotels while moving along the Nile. The bustling city of Tangier in northern Morocco is expecting a four-minute, 50-second eclipse, and the city is a great place to be in the heart of the action. When not viewing the eclipse, clients can spend time at historic sites such as the Tangier Casbah, Hercules Caves, local museums and more. Tamuda Bay, Morocco
If your clients are looking for a quieter spot in northern Morocco to watch the eclipse, Tamuda Bay offers a seaside resort area with a number of properties where they can relax, get some sun and see the eclipse.
