First stage of Tour d'Israel |
This March, Israel will host its first-ever Tour d’Israel, a five-day, 480-mile cycling competition held throughout the country from March 17-22, welcoming cyclists from around the world.
“This is the first time a cycling competition of this scale will take place in Israel,” said Arie Sommer, Israel Ministry of Tourism tourism commissioner, North and South America. “The tour route will provide participants with a one-of-a-kind experience of cycling through Israel’s vast and diverse landscape.”
The tour will begin in Mount Hermon, located in northern Israel, and travel south toward Galilee and Nazareth, following the Mediterranean coastline and then riding onto Jerusalem, Masada, the Dead Sea, Beer Sheva and the Negev Desert until its final stop at the Red Sea in Eilat.
For the competition, two riders per team will compete, and teams will be separated into nine different categories depending on age and gender. Daily laps will range in length from 77 to 112 miles long.
The Tour d’Israel is being organized by Zimuk Ltd, which has organized many large bike riding events throughout Israel.
Israeli national cycling champion Avihay Grinberg is also expected to participate in the inaugural ceremony to be held on March 17.
