Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide has announced plans to open the first St. Regis property in the Maldives in April 2016. The high-end luxury property has been dubbed The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort, Maldives and will be located about 40 minutes southwest by seaplane from the capital city of Male.

Set on a private atoll, covering more than 20 acres, the new property will feature 77 private villas, offering travelers contemporary design married with the setting’s “lush vegetation and pristine lagoon,” according to Jim Petrus, senior vice president and global brand leader of St. Regis Hotels & Resorts.

“We are particularly thrilled to bring the St. Regis brand to the Maldives,” Petrus told TravelAge West.

The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort will also be home to three restaurants; a signature bar; an infinity pool; a six-treatment-room spa; a state-of-the-art fitness center and yoga space; and a dive and guest activity center.

Petrus added that the St. Regis brand is set for significant growth beyond the Maldives in the near future.

“On track to reach 50 hotels and resorts in the next five years, St. Regis continues to grow in lockstep with the increasing, global demand for luxury,” he explained. “In addition to the Maldives, St. Regis will debut 10 hotels within the next 12 months alone, in destinations as diverse as Mumbai, Dubai and Kuala Lumpur.”
