Cellphone selfies have become a common way to document vacation travel. But why settle for a bunch of photos at arm’s length when you can work with a pro?

Vacationers who crave higher-quality visual souvenirs to show off to friends and family may want to consider the professional photography services available at a number of hotels around the Caribbean.

The benefits of collaborating with a photographer are many. Working with a pro allows travelers to focus more on relaxing and having fun. A professional photographer familiar with the local terrain can also help guide vacationers to the best and most beautiful locations, and even suggest activities and poses that make the most of the Caribbean’s natural beauty and unique cultural experiences.

Photography Sessions at Caribbean Hotels

Photographic services vary by hotel and are available at a variety of price points, with themed packages available at many properties. In some cases, the services may even be free. Such is the case at Sandals and Beaches Resorts, where the on-site photography teams offer free 20-minute photography sessions for guests staying at any of the 19 Sandals Resorts International properties. Options include a couples photoshoot on the beach and — at Beaches Resorts — a Sesame Street character shoot for children. Photographers are also well-versed at capturing exciting activities such as tubing and water skiing.

Also offering free photography services is Margaritaville Beach Resort Nassau in the Bahamas. All guests are eligible to receive a complimentary 10-minute photo shoot and only pay for any images they’d like to take home. The hotel also offers couples and family photoshoots that start at $299 for an hour, as well as customizable photo sessions and special birthday and celebration shoots.

Nearby, Baha Mar — the luxury resort complex home to Grand Hyatt, SLS and Rosewood properties — partners with Image Masters to provide a variety of photography services, including celebration photography, sunrise photo shoots, photos documenting water park visits and sessions specifically for expectant parents. The company’s Instagram shoots, meanwhile, are designed specifically for social media use.

As at many hotels, technology at Baha Mar makes it easy for guests to retrieve their photos. Through the Baha Mar Flamingo Photo Pass, guests can have their shots delivered to their mobile phones via facial recognition.

Creative wedding photography is a specialty at Club Med Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, which partners with local wedding planning company Bisutti Group to offer an array of wedding and engagement packages — all of which can include professional photography services. The property is also home to the Photo Boutique, which offers a variety of services for other travelers, and there's one at Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda as well, which is also in the Dominican Republic. Photographers can document guests enjoying activities such as horseback riding, archery and swimming.

In Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, Rock House has a photography concierge with multiple digital photography packages, including sessions with Elemento Photography, a company that specializes in photo shoots at luxury hotels and resorts in Turks and Caicos and in Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico, the company offers its services at Condado Vanderbilt Hotel and Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve.

Photography Lessons at Caribbean Hotels

Guests at two Ritz-Carlton properties in the Caribbean, meanwhile, can go beyond just posing for photos and actually learn to be better photographers themselves. The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman and Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve offer guests the opportunity to plunge into the warm Caribbean depths for lessons on how to use underwater cameras while snorkeling, with guidance from expert naturalists. As part of Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassador of the Environment program, the Grand Cayman property also offers a land-based nature photography class focused on documenting the destination’s flora and fauna. Participants also learn photo editing techniques — which just might help them take better photos on their next trip.
