According to a 2025 Virtuoso survey, 68% of Virtuoso members say clients are aware that their travel choices can have a positive impact. And, as demand for more immersive and responsible experiences continues to grow, the Caribbean offers an ever-growing number of opportunities for voluntourism, or tourism that incorporates volunteer activities.
From supporting a donkey sanctuary to helping preserve natural resources, there are a variety of rewarding activities around the region for travel advisors to recommend for clients. Here are several noteworthy options.
Conservation and Community in Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is home to multiple organizations that allow visitors to participate in local efforts toward animal welfare, environmental protection and cultural preservation. Among them is Scuba Dogs Society, which manages marine-focused initiatives such as the International Coastal Cleanup; the event draws locals and visitors every September for data gathering, shoreline restoration and education.
The conservation-focused nonprofit Para la Naturaleza, meanwhile, stages volunteer activities throughout the year, including native tree planting, trail restoration and wildlife habitat protection, in various parts of the island.
Animal-loving travelers can support local rescue efforts through organizations such as El Foster Club and Obra Rescue PR, both of which offer volunteer activities including walking rescued dogs, supporting adoption events and helping transport pets to their new homes.
Other Impactful Activities Around the Caribbean
Beyond Puerto Rico, voluntourism initiatives provide worthwhile possibilities to engage in a variety of efforts.
Aruba, for example, recently launched Aruba Volunteer Time Off, a program that encourages travelers to use their “volunteer time off” (VTO) days for experiences on the island that support local communities and the environment. This initiative makes it easier for agents and travelers to book comprehensive packages, since they include hotel accommodations as well as volunteer activities that range from beach cleanups and mangrove rehabilitation to animal care at the Aruba Donkey Sanctuary.
Participating resorts include Amsterdam Manor Beach Resort Aruba, Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort, Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort & Casino, Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort Spa and Casino and Radisson Blu Aruba.

The property has partnered with dog rescue center Potcake Place to offer puppy playdates — specifically, walks that can take place every day except Sunday. The $50 cost of the experience helps to support the organization, which cares for needy dogs and finds new homes for them.
Marine conservation is at the forefront in nearby South Caicos, where Salterra, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa partners with the School for Field Studies and the South Caicos Coral Reef Consortium to offer the Snorkel for a Cause program, with educational dives and participation in coral restoration efforts.
Further north, the Bahamas continues to support its sustainability priorities through mangrove restoration. Programs such as Mission for Mangroves on Grand Bahama Island allow visitors to learn from local experts, participate in plantings and support long-term ecosystem recovery.
In Belize, travelers can enjoy an upscale stay at any of The Belize Collection properties while contributing to local conservation efforts, thanks to the company’s reforestation initiative Seeds of Tomorrow. Guests can plant native trees and even track the progress of their contributions through an online impact map. Also in Belize, Elevate Destinations offers packages that include eco-lodge accommodations and community-based activities such as helping to build fuel-efficient stoves, constructing latrines and planting trees.
