Following the introduction of American Jazz and American Melody in 2021, American Cruise Lines (ACL) is planning to build and launch another pair of modern riverboats in 2022.
The fifth and sixth yet-to-be-named vessels in the series will be constructed at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, Md. and set sail on the Mississippi River.
“American’s two newbuilds are welcome news for the industry here at home,” said Charles B. Robertson, president and CEO of ACL, in a press release. “They closely follow the two riverboats we are introducing this year and demonstrate our ongoing commitment to growth and leading the U.S. small-ship market. While the pace of our newbuilds is increasing, we are committed to maintaining the small capacity of our ships, which continue to accommodate just 100-190 passengers. This distinction across our fleet truly enables us to deliver the personalized and sophisticated experience our guests have come to expect.”
Melody and the ships to follow will sport the Skywalk walking track, cantilevered out from deck five, under which will be the Ellipse Cafe on deck four. The vessels will also feature private balconies in all staterooms, expansive suites, a sky-lit atrium, a large fitness studio and several restaurants and lounges.
Since 2017, the ACL fleet has nearly doubled in size. By 2022, it will comprise 15 total vessels including five small cruise ships, four classic paddlewheelers and six modern riverboats. The brand intends to continue building new U.S. coastal ships, as well.
Until then, the 175-guest American Melody — with contemporary interior design by Miami-based Studio Dado — is scheduled to welcome passengers in August 2021.
