“The water level has risenit’s now approaching the 175-meters
mark, and cruising the river is even better than ever,” states
Larry Greenman, Manager of Public Relations and Customer Service
for Victoria Cruises. He adds, “Conventional wisdom used to be that
when the water rose, the scenery would disappear. That is certainly
not the case!”
Greenman explained that there is more to see than ever. He cited
several examples. First, the vistas of the large gorges remain
virtually the same as before. New cities have been built along the
river at the high water mark, and now passengers can view the
completed dam structure on a sightseeing tour.
Another new feature of a Yangtze cruise today is that visiting
the small and mini-gorges is better than ever. With the rising
water, Victoria is able to go even deeper into the dramatic
interior of these rivers. “The steep cliffs with their verdant
scenery seem to be so close you can almost touch them.”
New Boats for Small Gorge Excursions
With the higher water levels, Victoria utilizes larger, more
comfortable boats to sail into the small gorges. Instead of small
sampans seating about 30 people, the larger excursion boats carry
130 passengers, and these passengers can get up and walk around the
ship to get the very best views.
