The Delta Queen Steamboat Company is offering a new series of
family-themed cruises, called “Riverventures,” during the summer
months, Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The three-11 night
vacations aboard the line’s authentic steamboats, the American
Queen and the Mississippi Queen, are geared for a
multi-generational experience along America’s storied rivers.
Trained counselors will host onboard adventures for three age
groups-the Pioneers (ages 5-8), the Adventurers (ages 9-12) and the
Explorers (ages 13-17). Special theme days and activities onboard
will include Mardi Gras dancing and a “Steamboat Olympics” in which
families compete against one another in sack races, egg tosses, pie
eating contests and more. Pioneers and Adventurers can earn a Cub
Pilot Certificate signed by the Captain by participating in
steamboat navigation activities.
Riverventure shore excursions, which are included in the price
of the cruise, have been designed with young cruisers in mind. “A
Child's Day on the Plantation,” will explore what life was like for
a Cajun child in the 1800s, with the opportunity to do activities
like shell corn, grind coffee, play old-fashioned games and see a
musket demonstration. “Mounds, Masks and Mansion” will explore the
world of Native Americans at the Grand Village of the Natchez.
Guests will visit a Natchez Indian house and ceremonial mounds, and
learn about plantation culture in the 1840s at Melrose
Plantation.
Children’s menus during Riverventure season will offer a
selection of favorite foods, including some specialties that
actually originated on riverboats, such as fried chicken and
chocolate brownies.
On three-night Riverventures in 2005, a family of three can
travel for $825 per person for the adults, and the child is free. A
family of four can purchase a stateroom for two adults at full fare
on a three-night cruise at $795 per person and the second stateroom
of equal or lesser value is free for two children under 18.
Additional savings are available for bookings before June 30.
