Hotel Review: Shangri-La Hotel Singapore

It’s rare to find an ultra-luxurious property that also aspires to be a top hotel for families — especially one with a legendary pedigree in one of the world’s hippest cities — but that’s what visitors will find at Shangri-La Hotel Singapore. Built in 1971, the iconic property is the flagship hotel for the Shangri-La brand. It’s located on 15 acres in the heart of the city near the Orchard Road shopping district.

The hotel offers a great program for kids called Buds by Shangri-La, which includes an indoor-outdoor play space with swings, slides, a piano floor, a ball pit and more. There are also themed areas: Muddy is for budding artists; Stage is a music studio for young performers; and Bake is a cooking classroom. (On a recent visit, I watched a 5-year-old girl in Bake carefully add the final piping to a cake she had just taken out of the oven.)

Outside, a giant pirate ship offers more slides and swings, and there is a water-play zone nearby. Plus, the hotel’s massive swimming pool features a wading area and jet fountains for little ones.

The property’s focus on families can be seen in the rooms, as well. The ninth floor offers five Themed Family Suites and 19 Deluxe Family Rooms. While both categories are family-friendly, the Themed Family Suites are one-of-a-kind, with names such as Safari, Treetop, Castle, Underwater and Space. A special feature of each suite is a connecting tunnel between the two bedrooms. The suites also have additional storage options, deep vanity sinks for bathing a baby and spaces for diaper-changing, as well as pantries with induction heaters and large refrigerators.

As for food, the hotel’s buffet features a range of kid-friendly items, including curated kids’ menus that were designed by nutritionists to provide tasty, balanced meals.
Finally, Shangri-La offers a range of child care amenities, including car seats for airport transfers, strollers, travel cots and high chairs. Smaller items such as bath toys, bibs, thermometers, potties, diaper bins and more can also be provided.

In a city that’s known for big business, it’s refreshing to find a luxury oasis for kids where having fun is the only item on the agenda.
