Hotel Review: Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore

There is no better example of how Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore is reimagining the guest experience than Jena, the property’s robotic staff member. A fully autonomous relay robot, Jena roams the property delivering food and other amenities to guests, as well as assisting with local advice and other travel plans.

The Hotel Jen brand, an offshoot of Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts located in 12 major destinations throughout Asia, is the first international hotel chain to use robots in the region, and it’s a sign that guests at the hotel should expect a fresh, modern approach.

“Known to curate playful experiences, Hotel Jen, through the relay robots, yet again proves it can surprise and delight urban adventure-seekers,” said Cetin Sekercioglu, executive vice president for Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts.

In 2015, the 565-room Hotel Jen underwent a $33 million makeover that infused new life into the property — creating a younger vibe that includes an emphasis on original art. The hotel has all the features that travelers want, including an extensive buffet, a family-style restaurant with local Singaporean food, a grab-and-go cafe, a large gym, a pool and more.

Plus, the hotel is located in the heart of the Orchard Road shopping district, just minutes from the Singapore Botanical Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It also has a sense of style that keeps it from being stuffy, utilitarian or boring.

My room was modern and comfortable, with midcentury-modern touches. The desk area had wood paneling and 1960s-era furnishings, while an alcove by the window included a seating area with plush cushions. The bathroom was compact, but stylish, with a walk-in shower.

One of the unique guestroom amenities offered is the use of a Handy brand smartphone that guests can take with them as they travel around the city. The device provides unlimited calls to the U.S., free Wi-Fi access, a city guide, the ability to book tickets to popular attractions and a way to quickly connect to the hotel and emergency services.

Clients who are looking for a bit of additional luxury should book a room on the 17th floor, which includes access to the Club Lounge. This exclusive spot is open and staffed from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., but is accessible 24 hours per day with a room key. Here, guests can get a buffet breakfast, a mid-afternoon treat, all-day drinks and snacks, evening cocktails, concierge services and more.

The property is connected to a shopping mall with many international brands, and a complimentary shuttle can take guests to Orchard Road. Or, a visitor can borrow a bicycle from the hotel and explore like a local.

Hotel Jen has a younger ambiance than some of the more luxurious brands in Singapore without sacrificing comfort. It offers a reliable and upscale, but not over-the-top, option for clients — robot included.
