How to Play Big in Walt Disney World's Toy Story Land

Jul 25, 2018
How to Play Big in Walt Disney World's Toy Story Land
Disney’s Bob Chapek joined a few “Toy Story” pals — including Tim Allen, the actor who voiced Buzz Lightyear in “Toy Story” — to officially open Toy Story Land.

The 11-acre land, inspired by Andy’s backyard from Pixar’s popular “Toy Story” films, includes two brand-new attractions — and one expanded favorite — as well as Woody’s Lunch Box, a dining venue serving on-the-go menu items with a nostalgic twist.

“With this new land, we’re taking what we do best — creating magical experiences — and combining them with the heart, the humor and the adventure of ‘Toy Story,’” said Bob Chapek, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

“We’ve created an unbelievable place where you will magically transform to the size of a toy and experience new adventures for the whole family.”

Toy Story Land was built upon the idea that Andy created the fun-filled playground out of the things in his toy box; for example, there’s a talking Sheriff Woody that greets guests as they enter. Kids will love playing with their favorite “Toy Story” characters, including Woody, Jessie the Yodeling Cowgirl, Buzz Lightyear, Slinky Dog, the Aliens and the Green Army Men. Meanwhile, parents will love seeing some classic toys from when they were kids, such as Rubik’s Cubes, Dominos and lampposts that are shaped like Tinkertoys.

“We’ve had a great time playing with the idea of going into a world of toys,” said Dave Minichiello, executive creative director for Toy Story Land. “We’ve not only incorporated all the storytelling elements and characters from the ‘Toy Story’ films, but also a whole new world made of classic and new toys.”

That new world includes two new rides. During the new Slinky Dog Dash, guests sit in a colorful Slinky Dog vehicle that zips around curves, over hills and down drops. The family-friendly coaster also treats riders to a musical “Grand Finale” starring Wheezy the toy penguin.

Meanwhile, on Alien’s Swirling Saucers, guests cruise around three spinning circle tracks in flying saucers as they’re chauffeured by little green aliens. Additionally, Toy Story Mania! — already a popular attractions at Disney’s Hollywood Studios — has a new carnival game box entrance from Toy Story Land. Plus, the addition of a third track allows more guests to try their luck at the ride’s 4-D shooting carnival games.

And because even toys need to eat, Andy “created” dining venue Woody’s Lunch Box using a vintage lunch box and thermos. Taking its cue from classic lunchtime fare, this quick-service spot features favorites such as the Grilled Three-Cheese Sandwich, which is made with cheddar, provolone and — to guarantee a gooey center — a sharp-cheddar cream cheese spread created specially for this sandwich by Disney chefs. In honor of Woody himself, two of the menu items are perfect for hungry cowboys and cowgirls: crispy potato barrels covered in chili and cheese called “Totchos,” and a Texas-style BBQ Brisket Melt.

Everyone has a special food memory, so it can be tricky putting a modern spin on the favorites,” said Lenny DeGeorge, concept development culinary director for Walt Disney World. “We honored these classic dishes by using the best ingredients to elevate the flavors.”

Lunch Box Tarts — made fresh daily by hand — are for dessert, and guests can choose from two flavors: raspberry garnished with dried fruit, or chocolate-hazelnut garnished with caramelized bacon.

“We’re taking a big step in the in the evolution of Disney’s Hollywood Studios — from a place that took you behind the scenes into one that actually puts you and your family at the center of the action,” Chapek said. “What kid — or kid at heart — hasn’t wanted to see their toys come to life and play right alongside them? So, we can think of no better way to kick off the future of this great park than inviting you to do just that in Andy’s backyard.”
