Coast Coal Harbour Hotel: Vancouver's Sophisticated Urban Retreat

Jul 29, 2011

Sophisticated and modern, the Coast Coal Harbour Hotel in Vancouver, B.C., is a sleek urban retreat. Ideal for business travelers and families alike, the clientele of the hotel are a subtle combination of both. Located in the Coal Harbour area of downtown Vancouver, the hotel is within walking distance of the city’s bustling business district, and popular tourist areas, such as Robson Street, Gastown and the Pacific Centre, are just a short stroll away.

During our stay, we enjoyed the heated, outdoor pool, the close proximity of a local park as well as the convenient in-room dining. I’ve never had milk for my 2-year-old daughter arrive so fast. I also found time to visit the large fitness center, and my husband and I headed downstairs for late-night drinks at Prestons, the restaurant on the second floor of the hotel, as well.

Dining and entertainment options include Prestons, serving creative West Coast cuisine with Asian and Mediterranean influences in a trendy, small-plate style. Menu items consist of braised pork rillets with apple compote, honey shallot jus and potato shoestrings; a traditional pad Thai; a wild mushroom ravioli with caper berries, oven-dried grape tomatoes, a red wine reduction and fresh basil; and more. Prestons bar features a variety of wines including a selection of B.C. vintages. To kick things up a notch, the bar offers a clever martini menu with a bent on fruit-inspired drinks, including the Tuk Tuk made of Thai Mehkong liquor, mango liqueur, muddled citrus and apple juice; the Paper Boy, a gin martini with Cassis, blueberry liqueur, muddled blueberries and mint and apple juice; and the Bellatini — my personal favorite — made with absolute vodka, peach schnapps, sparkling wine and a red wine float.

The 220 guestrooms of the 20-story hotel are comfortable and filled with the essential amenities that travelers — leisure or business — have become accustomed to finding in a modern guestroom. All guestrooms feature free high-speed wired and wireless Internet access, free local calls, a daily newspaper, on-demand movies, a 36-inch, flat-panel television, tea and coffee service, 24-hour, in-room dining and more.

Clients can choose from five different room categories. The Coast Comfort room offers two double beds and is the most basic. The Superior room has a king-size bed, and the Superior Double offers two double beds. Both feature terrycloth bathrobes and upgraded amenities. A variety of rooms in the Coast Comfort and Superior room categories are pet friendly, as well.

For more spacious accommodations, the Premium room offers a king-size bed, a separate sitting area with a pullout sofa bed, bathrobes, upgraded amenities and more. These rooms tend to be on the upper floors of the hotel and also offer better views. For those who need more space, Premium Balcony rooms feature a king-size bed, a parlor, a private balcony as well as bathrobes and upgraded amenities.

For corporate travelers who wish to conduct business at the property, the hotel offers ample meeting space including two boardrooms as well as a 5,000-square-foot ballroom. There are also four additional meetings rooms as well as hotel suites designed for meetings of up to six people and featuring a wet bar.

The hotel ballroom can also be used for weddings with a seating capacity of 420 people. Event planners are on hand to help those wishing to plan a reception at the property.
