Clients looking for contemporary luxury in a lively Tokyo location will find a perfect fit at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo this year. To celebrate its 10-year anniversary, the five-star Grand Hyatt Tokyo in Roppongi is sprucing itself up, renovating all guestrooms and suites by mid-2014.

Hyatt returned to DAS Concepts, the original designers of the hotel’s guestrooms and public areas, to bring the rooms and suites up to date while maintaining the warmth and ambience of the property. The design focuses on Japanese aesthetics, comfort, functionality and enhanced room connectivity.

The updated suites are comfortable and contemporary. All suites now feature faster Wi-Fi connections, a full audio-visual panel with bluetooth and HDMI connectivity throughout and high-performance speakers, all easily connected to iPhones, iPods and other devices. The walls are wood-paneled and the rooms feel spacious, with earth-toned natural fabrics and mahogany-finished fixtures. Touches such as a bento box of sweet and savory treats on the coffee table and fresh strawberries upon arrival add to the experience.

Space is a luxury in Tokyo, so the suites are designed to maximize the square footage for comfort and convenience. All rooms and suites feature a deep soaking tub and a separate shower area. In the suite I toured on a recent visit, the bathroom made up roughly a third of the size of the entire room, yet nothing felt compromised.

Each restaurant in the hotel is unique and focuses on original, authentic and high-quality dining. The French Kitchen serves gourmet French cuisine and has a private “Chef’s Table,” equipped with its own kitchen. It is ideal for special dinners, private parties and celebrations. The Oak Door steakhouse is popular with local expats, particularly for its annual American Thanksgiving feast. There is an Italian restaurant and several Japanese cuisine options as well.

The property has a full-service spa, a fitness center and a large indoor pool lined with red granite stone imported from China. Guests can use the fitness equipment and pool free of charge but will be asked to pay extra to use the locker rooms, relaxation area, sauna and plunge pools.

The property is part of the Roppongi Hills urban re-development complex, owned by Mori Building Co., Ltd. It houses 10 different restaurants and bars within the hotel, 387 guestrooms and more than 30,000 square feet of event space. The complex also comprises a number of high-end retail shops, along with apartments, offices, restaurants, cafes, movie theaters, a museum, an outdoor amphitheater and plenty of green areas. Pockets of outdoor space have been carved out inside the Grand Hyatt as well, offering a Zen-like retreat for guests who want to experience the outdoors from within the 21-story hotel.

To help clients experience the best of Japan, book a room on the west side of the property, on the 11th through 20th floor. From these rooms, guests will have a stunning view of Mount Fuji, one of Japan’s most famous attractions.
