This spring, Starwood Hotels & Resorts opened two St. Regis properties in Malaysia, its first in the country. The St. Regis Langkawi welcomed luxury guests to Langkawi in early April, while The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur opened its doors in Kuala Lumpur on May 3.
Home to 208 guestrooms, The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur is situated in the city’s Sentral Precinct and is the brand’s 38th hotel worldwide. Standard rooms at this property begin at 678 square feet and jump to 1,485 square feet for the property’s entry-level suites.
Affluent clients, however, may want to consider The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur’s new Royal Suite, which spans nearly 4,000 square feet and offers private elevator access, an outdoor terrace with panoramic views of the city skyline, a full kitchen, walk-in his-and-her wardrobes, a gym and a massage room.
The hotel features a rooftop bar and six restaurants, including Taka by Sushi Saito, the first restaurant outside of Tokyo run by three-Michelin-starred chef Takashi Saito.
Travelers looking for a less urban experience may want to consider the oceanfront The St. Regis Langkawi, which offers 85 suites and four overwater villas.
“The resort is located on its own tranquil private cove and natural lagoon away from overcrowded beach areas, and it’s perfect for couples on their vacation or honeymoon,” said Thomas Schwall, general manager for The St. Regis Langkawi.
An archipelago that has earned UNESCO Global Geopark status, the Langkawi property is home to rock formations that are 550 million years old, according to Schwall, who notes a three- to four-hour boat activity option the hotel has designed for guests.
“We carefully hand-selected an excursion for the whole family to experience our UNESCO status through our ‘Geo-Forest Safari’ program,” he said. “The excursion includes exploring the historical rock formations of the island and its mangroves, seeing the wildlife on Gorilla Mountain, eagle watching and fish feeding, as well as up-close encounters with hundreds of sleeping bats.”
The Langkawi property features four eateries and one bar. The resort is also home to the 8,600-square-foot Iridium Spa.
Thirty minutes by car from the Langkawi Airport, the hotel is the first new luxury branded property to open on the archipelago’s largest island in 10 years, according to Schwall, and it sits adjacent to a 600-yard, white-sand beach fronting the Andaman Sea.
