This year, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. will open a total of six properties in Latin America, growing its portfolio to a total of nearly 70 hotels in the region by the end of 2011.
"Of particular interest is Brazil, where a flurry of hotel development is expected in the run-up to the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics," said Osvaldo Librizzi, president of Starwood's Latin America division.
Starwood's Westin Hotels brand, in particular, will increase its portfolio by 50 percent in the region with a total of four new properties this year. Westin will be debuting for the first time in Peru, Panama and Costa Rica. In Costa Rica, Starwood will open its first all-inclusive resort, The Westin Playa Conchal Resort & Spa, which is slated to debut in May. Starwood will also debut its Aloft brand in the region, with the opening of the Aloft Bogota Airport in Colombia, and will open its 10th Luxury Collection hotel in the region, the Villarica Park Lake Hotel & Spa in southern Chile. Starwood also plans to break ground on The St. Regis Buenos Aires later this year.
