Holland America Line Debuts Game of Thrones-Themed Excursion

Jun 21, 2014

What:
Holland America Line has launched a new shore excursion to visit “Game of Thrones” film sites in Belfast, Ireland.

Why It Matters:
Clearly, this is good news for guests visiting Belfast onboard the Prinsendam and the Rotterdam, who will be able to participate in both Hollywood and Irish history with visits to Winterfell (Castle Ward) and Robb Stark’s camp (Audley’s Castle). But Holland America Line’s latest addition is also indicative of trends in the travel industry, which is incorporating more and more popular culture into its offerings. “Harry Potter-” and “Frozen”-themed tours and cruises are making the round, and IsramWorld has also debuted a “Game of Thrones” tour as part of its Iceland itinerary. Fandom is an excellent way to draw travelers to a new destination they might not have considered, or to attract repeat travelers who are looking for something new in a country they have visited before. www.hollandamerica.com

- Fans will learn about special effects and costuming — including an opportunity to do a photo-shoot in actual costumes from the show.

What They Are Saying:
“Shore excursions are a great way to discover a port and many have evolved to be engaging, trendy and informative so our guests have an enriching experience,” said Erik Elvejord, Director of PR for Holland America Line. “For fans of the series, the new tour offers guests a behind-the-scenes look at many of the show’s locations as well as an understanding of the rich history of Belfast.  For guests not as familiar with the show, we are sure they will enjoy the tour and perhaps come home not only as a fan but with a greater understanding of its history and surroundings.”
