Last month, the 12th Annual World Tourism Awards — cosponsored by American Express, Corinthia Hotels, the International Herald Tribune and Reed Travel Exhibitions — were presented at a special ceremony during the World Travel Market in London. Among the winners, Tourism Cares, a nonprofit organization, was honored for awarding scholarships to the future tourism workforce and organizing volunteer projects to help restore tourism-related sites. Tour Operator Gap Adventures was recognized for creating The Planeterra Foundation, which dedicates all donations to sustainable community development through travel, and the destination of Cyrene, Libya, was also honored for its notable archaeological and heritage preservation.
