During a recent evening commute, driving down the Pacific Coast
Highway in Malibu, I heard a radio commentator quote a
Native-American proverb. Perhaps it was the meditative state I was
in as I watched the sun set on the Pacific Ocean, but this
particular quote made me think about all of us in the travel
industry.
You see, the quote was, “As you go the way of life you may come
across a great chasm. It’s not as wide as you think. Jump.”
And I asked myself, “Are we jumping?”
There’s no question, during the last few months and even years,
all of us in the travel industry have faced many a “great chasm.”
We’ve watched as many of our colleagues have tumbled into the
chasm, while still others have made it to the other side, changed
and positioned for future jumps.
So are you a jumper, or are you standing at the precipice,
indecisive and unsure of your next step? Are you waiting for a
bridge to be built, or are you gathering materials to construct
your own bridge? Did you recognize the opportunities to be found on
the other side? Did you find the resources to succeed? Have you
jumped?
I asked myself these same questions. And in most cases I
answered “yes.” I’ve jumped both professional and personal chasms.
And I know the easier jumps were ones where I drew strength and
endurance from those around me.
In fact, as publisher of TravelAge West, I take to heart our
commitment to you, our reader, to serve as a resource and to
provide material to help you bridge the chasms.
And I know that this week, as we host our 29th annual trade show
and conference in Las Vegas, we will again be providing valuable
resources and motivation to make the jumps easier.
So if you’re standing at the precipice, jump. It’s not as wide
as you think.
