The Alaska Marine Highway System — a ferry system that provides safe, reliable and efficient transportation of people, goods and vehicles among Alaska communities — has released its operating schedule for 2011. In addition, the Alaska Marine Highway began monthly service between Juneau and Gustavus earlier this month. Service will increase to once weekly in May and, then, twice weekly in June.
In May, the MV Kennicott will begin direct cross-gulf service from Bellingham, Wash., to the port of Whittier, located 60 miles south of Anchorage. The cross-gulf run will stop in Ketchikan, Juneau and Yakutat for connections throughout the system with continuing service to Kodiak Island.
In April, the MV Tustumena will begin the twice monthly summer service to the communities of the Aleutian Islands.
Beginning summer 2011, the Alaska Marine Highway will offer weekly ferry service to the community of Gustavus, known as the gateway to Glacier Bay National Park. Travelers can make easy connections via Juneau aboard the MV LeConte and explore some of the most spectacular scenery in Alaska.
Cabins aboard the Alaska Marine Highway ferries provide basic amenities and vary in price according to size and location. Cabins are outfitted with single or double bunk bed-style berths and vary in size and availability among vessels. All cabins are sold by the cabin per trip, rather than by a per-person basis. Most cabins include private bathroom facilities, and public restroom and shower facilities are also available. Cabins tend to sell out quickly, especially on mainline routes, and should be reserved well in advance of travel.
