Anchorage Celebrates Mardi Gras Early

Aug 30, 2011

On Sept. 9, downtown Anchorage will be letting the good times roll with the 7th Annual Taste of Mardi Gras, a Mardi Gras-themed street party on 4th Avenue, between G and H streets. The Taste of Mardi Gras event is Anchorage’s only street party recreating Bourbon Street, featuring authentic Cajun cuisine from local chefs, live music and street performers.

Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 on the day of the event, and proceeds go to the American Red Cross of Alaska. Visitors will be treated to a Cajun-style feast, a drink ticket for beer or wine, live music from H3 and Zydecohos and given access to all participating venues including Anchor Pub & Club, Gaslight Lounge and the Pioneer Bar.

Taste of Mardi Gras was born in 2005 during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina at which time more than 350 American Red Cross of Alaska volunteers were deployed to the devastated Gulf Coast. To further assist with the massive relief effort, Alaskans donated more than $1 million.

Honoring the rich tradition of Cajun style cuisine, several of Alaska’s top chefs came together to throw New Orleans-style event to help their southern neighbors. In the course of just a few weeks, a successful party was planned which, in turn, raised more than $80,000 to support relief efforts.
