Beyond the Strip

Apr 11, 2008
Red Rock Casino Resort Spa
Red Rock Casino Resort Spa
With all the neon and non-stop action, Las Vegas has a tendency to put visitors on visual overload. For some clients and veteran Vegas visitors, who have been there, done that, this over-stimulation may be a bit, well, overwhelming. As we know, not everyone feeds off the energy of the pulsing lights and crowds. So, for those looking for a more laid-back approach to taking in the sights and sounds of Las Vegas, we offer a subdued alternative a list of places removed from the Strip that still share the high-energy vibe of the city. Lake Las Vegas

For clients looking for a real escape, Lake Las Vegas might as well be northern Italy at least that’s what this man-made, 320-acre private lake was designed to resemble. Its Tuscan-inspired design surrounds the lake, which includes a floating concert stage and the quaint MonteLago Village, a collection of waterfront art galleries, fine restaurants and boutiques.

Don’t be fooled, there is plenty to do here in this far-off oasis 17 miles from the Strip. Lake Las Vegas has three challenging championship golf courses, spas, casinos, a marina with watercraft rentals and yacht cruises, plus a helipad, should your clients need it.

Oh, did we mention the accommodations: the AAA Five-Diamond Ritz-Carlton, Loews Lake Las Vegas Resort and MonteLago Village Resort.

Red Rock Casino Resort Spa

Clear across the valley, on the city’s far western slope, the Red Rock is celebrating its second anniversary. The flagship property of the Stations Casinos group is an elegant, comfortable getaway in the shadow of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Playing off its location, Red Rock has an Adventure Spa for guests who enjoy outdoor activities such as biking, rock climbing and kayaking, and the hotel will set up a trip for your clients.

The resort has a number of restaurants including T-Bones Chophouse, which has a 7,500-bottle wine loft, and Terra Rossa, where homemade pasta awaits.

Red Rock offers spacious luxury suites, such as the 3,090-square-foot Grand Villa Suite, which has a 10-person spa, for those who want to splurge, and room specials can always be found online.

The Silverton
Guestrooms The Silverton recently went
through a complete remodel.
Silverton Casino Lodge
Another property not to be overlooked is the Silverton Casino Lodge just south of the Strip. The Silverton has the look of a Rocky Mountain lodge after undergoing a complete remodel. The rooms are truly rustic with antlers and trophy animal heads mounted on the walls, beds constructed with tree branches for posts and Jacuzzi tubs encased in weathered wood.

The Silverton also has a 117,000-gallon aquarium with an artificial reef and more than 4,000 tropical fish, including stingrays and sharks. And clients angling for outdoor adventure will find a Bass Pro Shop carrying all the gear they’ll ever need.

Golden Nugget

The Golden Nugget delivers a true, authentic Vegas experience. Still the class of downtown, the resort is a mix of new and old Vegas. A recent renovation has transformed the property into a swanky, lively destination. New owner, Landry’s Restaurants, has put its stamp on the legendary Nugget adding a Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse, Lillie’s Noodle House and the Italian trattoria-style Grotto from its restaurant chain.

The Tank, a circular pool complex, features a 200,000-gallon shark tank with a three-story water slide that cruises through the tank. The recently opened Gold Diggers nightclub has a patio overlooking the Fremont Street Experience.

The Platinum
The Platinum, one of the city’s
most overlooked resorts.
The Platinum
Alright, so we’re not venturing far off the Strip by adding The Platinum to this list; it’s just a stone’s throw away, but it may just be one of the most overlooked resorts in all of Las Vegas.

Two blocks from the Strip, the resort offers amazing views and, get this, the smallest room the Solitaire Suite is 911 square feet! Talk about stretching out. For clients who need even more space, the two-bedroom, two-bath Marquis Suite is a 2,410-square-foot behemoth.

The Platinum is a non-gaming, non-smoking luxury resort that pampers its guests. The suites are all condo units with furnished living rooms, 42-inch plasma televisions, fully-stocked kitchens, private terraces, electric fireplaces, Bose radios and whirlpool baths. The resort has wireless Internet access, a 24-hour business center, a complimentary health and fitness studio and a spa. Plus, Misora, the 17th-floor rooftop terrace, not only has great naked-eye views of the city, but also telescopes for stargazing.
