Fall and Winter Travel Deals, Events for Santa Fe

This fall and winter, the city of Santa Fe, N.M., will host a number of events to welcome the fall and winter season, including unique art exhibits, farmers’ markets and various cultural festivals.

Recycle Santa Fe Art Festival’s “Waste/Not” Exhibit
Through Nov. 14, visitors can check out the “Waste/Not” art exhibit at the Community Gallery in the Santa Fe Community Convention Center as part of the Recycle Santa Fe Art Festival. The exhibit is created from at least 50 percent recycled materials.

Santa Fe Farmers’ Market
Throughout the month of October, the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market will be held every Tuesday and Saturday morning and Thursday evenings from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Santa Fe rail yard. On Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., locals and visitors alike can learn from top local chefs during a unique “Cook With the Chef” series of events. Items for sale during the fall season include fall fruits and cheeses for snacking, jams, jellies, vinegars and soaps for gifts, as well as local crafts.

Murray Perahia Performs
Renowned pianist Murray Perahia will make an appearance at the Lensic Center for the Performing Arts on Oct. 25, playing Bach, Beethoven and Brahms.

Dia de los Muertos at the Museum of International Folk Art
The Museum of International Folk Art will celebrate the Latin American holiday, El Dia de los Muertos, that honors the deceased on Oct. 31. Festivities will include kids’ art projects, sweet treats, music and more.

San Diego Feast Day
The city of Tesuque Pueblo, which is located just north of Santa Fe, will honor its patron saint, San Diego, on Nov. 12 with ceremonial dances and a community gathering. Tesuque is considered to be one of the oldest pueblos in the Southwest, having been established around 1250.

Winter Indian Market
From Nov. 26-28, visitors can shop at this event which features 175 Native American artists selling their handmade work. Music, storytelling and demonstrations will also be available.

Ski Santa Fe Opens
The popular ski area of Ski Santa Fe is scheduled to open on Thanksgiving weekend, conditions permitting. Ski Santa Fe features 73 named trails and is a 30-minute drive from downtown Santa Fe.

Winter Spanish Market
This market, held on Dec. 4 and 5, highlights traditional Spanish colonial arts including carvings, paintings, textiles, silver and tinwork.

Christmas at the Palace
On Dec. 10, visitors can take part in a free Christmas event celebrating New Mexico’s Hispanic, Native American and Anglo traditions in the Palace of the Governors. Hot cider will be served, and the event is accompanied by live music, entertainment and a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

Las Posadas
Las Posadas is a traditional Spanish play that depicts the search taken by Mary and Joseph as they searched for shelter on Christmas Eve. In Santa Fe, the play will be performed outdoors on Dec. 12 and begins with a candlelight procession at the Palace of the Governors. The performance ends with carols and cookies at the courtyard of the Palace of the Governors.

Feast of Guadalupe
Also on Dec. 12, the Pojoaque Pueblo will celebrate the annual feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patroness of the Americas and patron saint of Pojoaque Pueblo. Festivities include traditional ceremonial dances and visitors may be invited to dine with pueblo families, but are advised not to linger.

Farolitos
On Christmas Eve, hundreds of candles placed within paper bags, also known as farolitos, will line the streets, sidewalks, steps, roofs and even trees surrounding Santa Fe’s main plaza, as well as the Cross of the Martyrs.

Noche Buena
The midnight Christmas Eve mass held at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi commemorates a folk story about the animals in the manger on the night of Christ’s birth.

Native American Dance Performances
Throughout the month of December, visitors may watch numerous ceremonial dances held at the Native American pueblos located near Santa Fe. Performances often feature elaborate traditional garments and many honor animals, such as the deer dance at Taos Pueblo.

Santa Fe Winter Fiesta
From Feb. 18-27, 2011, Santa Fe will host a special week of activities that include daily events, nightly parties and special savings including skiing, snowshoeing, special museum days, a culinary day, performing arts and fine arts. The activities coincide with the popular ArtFeast weekend, to be held from Feb. 25-27.
