Starting June 8 through June 16, The National Institute of Flamenco in Albuquerque will be hosting the Festival Flamenco. Dancers of every experience level are invited to partake in workshops, lessons and performances as part of the larger Savor Albuquerque festival.
More than 30 workshops will be available to teach festival-goers about the art of flamenco dancing. Taught by the festival’s “master artists,” these workshops cover everything from Bulerias and Tangos to Dance Repertory and Bata de Cola. There will also be a five-day Beginner’s Block taught by Joaquin Encinias. Held for three hours each day, this workshop will introduce students to flamenco technique, song rhythm and structure as well as basic flamenco steps. Musicians can also attend lessons on a variety of instruments, including the guitar and percussion instruments like the cajon and palmas or rhythmic clapping. The performances will include more than 50 different dancers who have danced in cities like Sevilla, Spain; Paris, New York and Tokyo. Past festival artists include Antonio Canales, members of the Amaya family and the Farruco family.
“I’ve realized this is one of the most important festivals in the world because of their tradition, their respect and the love they have toward flamenco,” said Jose Maya, a past festival artist.
Performances will occur every night of the festival.
