Gal pals and movie buffs alike will want to know about the annual Everett Women’s Film Festival, slated for Feb. 27-28 at the Everett Performing Arts Center. The city of Everett is located 27 miles north of Seattle.
Since 1997, EWFF has honored the spirit, drive, creativity and diversity of women filmmakers as they explore human issues and conditions through feature film, documentaries, comedies, shorts and animation. The festival focuses on high quality and eclectic thematic content, giving it a quirky yet balanced flavor.
Following is a short description of the 2010 film line-up:
Frozen River (USA/2008): Desperation knows no borders in this character study of two women – one white, the other Mohawk – on opposite sides of the reservation.
Mostly Martha (Germany/2001): A little bit French, a little bit Italian, a little obsession and lots of food. Set in a busy upscale restaurant with humor and drama to spare.
Sweet Crude (USA/2009): Something strange happened while filming the story of a simple library opening. Local filmmaker Sandi Cioffi will be at the showing to answer questions about the tragic exploitation that occurred when government corruption, corporate greed and the human cry for justice intersected in the Niger Delta.
Afghan Star (United Kingdom/2008): Think “American Idol" in Afghanistan. The entertainment industry becomes an intriguing catalyst for cultural change.
Clotheslines (USA/1988): With verve and humor, this film shows the love/hate relationship that women have with the task of cleaning the family's clothes.
Kitchen (France/2005): A novice cook is faced with two live lobsters. The lobsters win… mostly.
The Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo (USA/2009): Taking bug collection to unbelievable new levels, Japan's quirky passion puts humanity in its place.
Reel Grrls 2008 Class Project: Fourteen shorts created by the students of the Reel Grrls after-school media and technology training program. The program's mission: "A woman has never won an Academy Award for directing. Reel Grrls would like to change that."
