White Pass and Yukon Railroad
This train was completed in 1900 to connect the Alaska port of Skagway to the inner gold fields of Canada and onto Alaska. Today, it is a major access point for land tours from cruise ships that drop off passengers in Skagway.
West Tours/ Holland America
Chuck West founded Arctic Alaska Travel Service in Fairbanks in 1946. West expanded into hotels, a motorcoach line and small-ship cruises. The company was renamed Westours, and became a dominant tour operator in Alaska until 1971 when West sold Westours to Holland America.
The Alaska Railroad
The Alaska Railroad had its beginnings back in 1903, as Alaska Central Railway.
Alaska Airlines
McGee Airways helped open the state in the 1930s, which became Alaska Airlines in 1943. It has grown by serving outside markets, yet still maintains its connection to Alaska.
Riverboat Discovery
The late Captain Jim Binkley started hosting tours in 1950 from a riverboat that he built in his backyard. Today, the Binkley riverboat tours and Eldorado Gold Camp are must-see attractions of Interior Alaska tourism.
