Drivers on San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge can now move freely through the toll plaza without stopping, for the first time in the bridge’s history. All-electronic toll collection went into effect in March, a high-tech trend occurring across the country and now on the historic San Francisco bridge.
“In the old days, you paid a toll by stopping at a toll booth and handing your money to a person or dropping your coins in a basket,” said Patrick Jones, International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA) executive director and CEO. “This frustrated motorists because they had to stop and wait to pay a toll. Not anymore. Tolling once meant stop, but today high-tech tolling means go, go, go.”
There are four ways to pay the electronic tolls: A FasTrak account can be used, or three new Pay-By-Plate options that include a License Plate Account, one-time payments and toll invoices.
