H5O bistro & bar Opens in Downtown Portland

Jul 31, 2008
Chef Nick Yanes // (c) H50 bistro & bar
Chef Nick Yanes
Coastal Hotel Group announced the opening of its new H50 bistro & bar, under Chef Nicholas A. Yanes.

Located in the heart of downtown Portland at 50 Southwest Morrison Street, between First Avenue and Naito Parkway (SW Front Avenue) in the totally new Hotel Fifty, H50 bistro & bar opened this month. Part of Hotel Fiftys $7 million makeover, the restaurant pairs a comfortable, welcoming Northwest ambience with Yanes innovative culinary style.

Chef Yanes brings nearly 8 years of culinary experience to H50 bistro & bar. His philosophy of cooking includes sourcing fresh, seasonal, and local ingredients to ensure a high level of quality, and providing simple, unexpected touches that make the dining experience memorable. Most recently, Yanes has served as consulting chef at Coyote Ridge Country Club in Carrolton, Texas and chef de cuisine/pastry chef at Dallas Fish Market in Dallas. Yanes also worked as a rounds man servicing all stations for Anthony Bombaci at Nana in Dallas. He is a graduate of the Western Culinary Institute in Portland, Ore.

Guests at H50 bistro & bar will get a taste of New American Cuisine with Global Influences. Highlighting the latest culinary trends, Yanes has created a menu that features items prepared from primarily local and/or organically grown ingredients. Menu items include starters such as Chilean Sweet Crab Spheres and Beet Carpaccio; main courses include Tea Smoked Sable Fish, Swordfish Saltimbocca, and Coriander Dusted Lamb with Fiddlehead Ferns. Lunch courses will include soups from Miso to Gumbo, salads from Green Papaya to Arugula, and sandwiches ranging from Escolar to Shrimp Roll. la carte breakfast items are offered and brunch specialties include Asparagus Alla Milanese with parmesan cheese, asparagus and fried egg. Dinner entrees range from $20-$40, with dinner starters from $5-$10, and desserts at $6. Lunch selections are offered for $10-$15. Breakfast and brunch items range from $8-$15.

H50 bistro & bar offers traditional restaurant service, room service and on-site catering services created by Yanes and his team. Special touches at H50 bistro & bar include complimentary on-site covered parking and free Wi-Fi for those conducting business meetings during a meal. The Chefs Table private dining room is a glass enclosed room for 8 guests to enjoy an intimate meal or a private meeting. The restaurant seats 74 guests and the bar accommodates 25. Specialty beverages include cocktails with fresh fruit ingredients and garnishes.

The restaurants name and design were selected to reflect Yanes commitment to creativity and ability to find a balanced chemistry between ingredients. To create H50 bistro & bars design, Coastal Hotel Group worked with Gibb Fisher of MNID Associates in Seattle. Earthy tones are used throughout the restaurant, including sage green carpet and butter-yellow accents. Original artwork by local artist Ryan Birkland adorns the restaurant. Birkland has been painting locally for eight years and has samples online at www.stumptownart.com. The large paintings in the restaurant include two colorful koi fish works that convey a feeling of movement and are done on canvas over salvaged wood. The third piece is a triptych three-panel abstract work with 3-D elements, painted on recycled interior doors from a house. In addition to the artwork, a fireplace feature in the restaurant adds a warming touch. The focal point of the restaurants design is a series of wall-length windows offering diners a view of the scenic Willamette River and Tom McCall Waterfront Park, with a dramatic backdrop of several of Portlands famous bridges and Mt. Hood.

H50 bistro & bar is open for breakfast daily from 6:30 to 11 a.m., and for lunch Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dinner is served Sunday through Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. The bar is open every day from 3 p.m. to closing, with happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. daily.
