Hotel Jerome to Reopen This Month

Aspen’s iconic Hotel Jerome is scheduled to reopen Dec. 14 after undergoing a historic restoration and design transformation.

The historic landmark, built during the height of the silver boom in 1889, has a colorful history and legendary patrons, including Hunter S. Thompson who used the hotel as his de facto office (which led Johnny Depp to hold the late writer’s memorial service there in 2005). The 123-year-old hotel is beloved by the Aspen Community and is often referred to as the city’s “crown jewel.”

Architect Sarah Broughton, of Rowland + Broughton, has spent more than 200 hours of archival research to ensure that the hotel retains its original structural integrity, while interior designer Todd-Avery Lenahan has reinterpreted the design aesthetic of the hotel’s Wild West roots in a richer way, working to balance authenticity with luxury and preservation.

In addition to the redesign, when the hotel reopens this winter, it will aim to regain its foothold as Aspen’s social hub with the introduction of Prospect, its signature restaurant, and the soon-to-be unveiled Living Room and J-Bar.
