Houston commemorates 175 years of Texas independence in 2011 with celebrations in the area where the decisive battle was fought and won. This important point in history, marking the birth of 28th state in the Union, will be celebrated with a number of activities for visitors and locals alike.
“Houston, which once served as the capital of the new Republic, has long been a major economic nucleus and is today the largest city in the Lone Star State,” said Houston Mayor Annise Parker. “Ours is a city rich in culture and heritage, eager to show it off.”
Parker suggests that visitors to Texas take advantage of the celebration’s number of events and festivities planned to get the most out of their experiences in Houston.
The anniversary of Texas’ Declaration of Independence and Revolution includes a traveling exhibition hosted at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, opening March 6. The Texas spirit comes alive with displays representing some of the most important moments and figures from the state’s past. The San Jacinto Monument and Museum will serve as the site for the San Jacinto Day Festival and Battle Reenactment on Saturday, April 16. The dramatic recount of the battle between Sam Houston’s Texan soldiers and the Mexican Army serves as an exciting replay of history for many. Even though the battle was said to only last 18 minutes, there will be plenty to do with a full day of music, food and games for guests of every demographic.
To get the full Texas experience, clients can enjoy three weeks of action at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, beginning March 1. Guests can watch the bull-rides or participate in barbecue cook-offs, along with enjoying the enormous carnival venue. Headlining artists for this year include Miranda Lambert, Sugarland, Brad Paisley, Selena Gomez and Martina McBride.
