According to Travel + Leisure, no place in the U.S. serves a burger quite like Houston, Texas. Named America’s Best Burger City, Houston has more options for superior burger-binging than you could shake a ketchup bottle at. Here are some hot spots:
· Lankford Grocery & Market, tucked away on Montrose, doesn’t seem like much from the outside. But don’t let this hole in the wall, fool you — the burgers here are outstanding. Lankford’s old-fashioned burger as well as its south-of-the-border burger (smothered in Monterey Jack, cilantro dressing, pico de gallo and avocado) are highly recommended.
· Similarly, Jonathan’s The Rub looks unassuming but grills a nine-inch certified angus chuck burger that won The Houston Press’ 2011 Best Burger contest.
· Bubba’s Burger Shack is famous for its buffalo burgers but has also developed a loyal fan base serving super-sized chili and mushroom-jack burgers.
· The Burger Guys serve sauced and topped burgers that break the traditional burger mold, such as the Sonoma burger with bacon, avocado and a fried egg (best when enjoyed with a side of duck fat-fried French fries). In fact, the restaurant took home top honors in the 2011 Houston Entree Awards for its “creative” burgers.
· Hubcap Grill is also known for its unusual burger offerings (including a Cheetos-burger, topped with crunchy Cheetos and cheese sauce) as well as its use of 100 percent chuck beef, homemade buns and real potato fries that are fried twice. The Hubcap Grill has two locations: Downtown Houston and a new location in Houston Heights.
For those who steer clear of beef, Houston also has some great veggie-friendly options. Ruggles Green, Beaver’s and Dry Creek all serve tasty vegetarian dishes, including, of course, vegetarian burgers.
