This year, the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly kicked off a yearlong celebration of the arts, proclaiming 2011 as the Year of the Artist in Ketchikan. The Inside Passage community’s rich cultural and artistic resources are key factors in Ketchikan’s growing popularity as a tourist destination.
Travelers can enjoy a broad range of activities that celebrate art and culture in Ketchikan this year, including concerts, plays, visual art exhibits, festivals and dance events.
The Random Acts of Art series, a program featuring Ketchikan literary, performing and visual artists, will take place periodically throughout the community from May through September.
Now in its 36th year, the family-friendly Blueberry Arts Festival will take place during the first weekend of August on Main Street. The entire street is blocked off to traffic, making way for local artists to show off their latest work. Other quirky activities include a slug race, pie-eating contest and trivia challenge. A selection of blueberry-inspired cuisine is also on offer throughout the weekend.
During the Winter Arts Faire, held on the Thursday and Friday after Thanksgiving, more than 75 local artisans showcase their arts and crafts, everything from wreaths, pottery and jewelry to photography, tie-dye clothing and metalwork. In addition, children and young adults can visit the on-site craft room to make art and crafts of their own.
