The county of Los Alamos, N.M., will be celebrating National Earth Week, starting April 22, and National Park Week, from April 20-28, with a variety of earth-friendly events. Free family-friendly activities will include an opportunity to replant trees destroyed in the Las Conchas Fire of 2011, as well as the Pajarito Environmental Education Center’s (PEEC) Earth Day Festival.
Up to 50 volunteers can help the Espanola Ranger District replant more than 10,000 Douglas Fir trees at the base of Pajarito Mountain, as part of a long-term effort by the Forest Service. Reservations can be made for April 12 and 13 and April 19 and 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
PEEC’s biggest event of the year, the 13th annual Earth Day Festival, will take place on April 20 with the theme “Dig Nature.” Festivities will include hands-on activities; the comedic Renaissance-style group, Clan Tyker; live music by the band Hill Stompers; a giant puppet show and more. On April 21, the PEEC’s Earth Day film, “Dirt! The Movie” will be shown at 6 p.m.
Bandelier National Monument will host various events during National Park Week, including a crafts demonstration with Santo Domingo Pueblo native Caroline Lovato, a night sky discussion, a guided hike of Burnt Mesa Trails, a pottery demonstration and more.
