The third hotel in California to continue the growing trend of environmentally-friendly design and service is the Portola Hotel & Spa. Portola, overlooking Monterey Bay, has been awarded Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification and is now only the seventh hotel in the U.S. to have attained this high level in the Existing Building category from the U.S. Green Building Council. There are currently three hotels in California that have attained such a label, and this Monterey property marks the first among those in the central region of the state.
Portola Hotel & Spa has been dedicated to the commitment toward sustainability for a number of years now. Hotel ownership, staff and management by an independent hotel brand in the existing building came together to set goals in order to decrease their amount of environmental impact through new green initiatives.
The plans implemented include the restoration of all guestrooms, replacing the carpeting and mattresses with only environmentally-friendly and certified wood products, adding Energy Star appliances and switching all bath amenities to biodegradable ones. Portola Hotel & Spa has also put into practice a comprehensive agenda to improve air quality through proactive inspections and cleanings of the location. Energy-efficient lighting upgrades in addition to low-flow water fixtures help to add to the hotel’s “green” title.
Adjacent to Fisherman’s Wharf and the Marina, Portola Hotel & Spa is also steps away from the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row.
