Auto Museum 2009

The new  recently opened in Fairbanks, Alaska, featuring a world-class collection of more than 70 historically significant American automobiles that showcase the heritage of the automobile during Alaska’s post-Gold Rush era.

“Even if you aren’t an old car aficionado, you will be wowed by these autos,” said Willy Vinton, museum manager and president of Fairbanks’ antique car club.

Encompassing 30,000 square feet, the museum features everything from horseless carriages and brass-era buggies to midget racers and the classic luxury cars of the 1930s. Most of the cars are maintained in running condition, and visitors can view repair projects taking place in the museum’s shop. During the summer evenings, docents will drive one or two of the automobiles around Wedgewood Resort.

“To be able to see these rare cars is great, but to hear them run and see them operate is priceless,” said Vinton.

In addition to the automobiles themselves, the museum walls are home to more than 70 historic photographs depicting the first automobiles to reach Alaska, including ones from the 1908 New York to Paris race. To complement the eras represented by the museum’s automobiles, there are also vintage clothing displays featuring a wide variety of styles from the late Victorian through early swing periods.

Through Sept. 15, the museum is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Winter hours will be posted on the museum’s Web site later in the year.

Tickets cost $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 to12. Guests staying at a Fountainhead Hotels property can get tickets for $4. Group rates are also available.
